Mastretfa all of you out there who believe that Mastretta does not introduce her characters enough, or that the first half of the novel is quite hard, there is a simple explanation for this.
Sus principales novelas son: Despite showing concern over certain issues, such as her husband’s plans to flood a valley for an electric dam thus forcing the relocation of hundreds of impoverished farmers and villagers in the area and his shady dealings with a neighbour, an American expatriate named Mike Heiss, his constant rebukes of her intrusions in his business as a “busybody woman” keep her from forcing the issue, though these stay clearly in her consciousness.
As historical novels go, this one is really good. In case you aangeles any hopes for this guy, he establishes himself pretty quickly as that guy that you would never let a friend or a daughter of yours marry.

Mi primer acercamiento a angeles Mastretta. Return to Book Page.
Years pass and another baby is born to them.
Aug 15, Aryas rated it really liked it. Catalina does marry him, though, and she finds herself quickly immersed into a world of shady politics as the general ascends to the position of the governor of Puebla, Mexico. Catalina is very sentimental and actually misses him. In my opinion, I would have preferred to see the general shot after the first pages so that we could see Catalina blossom post-psycho husband. This page was last edited on 27 Julyat Siendo el primer libro que leo de una autora mexicana, me gusto muchisimo.

angepes The novel is quite regionalized, it’s written by a Mexican woman whose mother grew up in that environment. She’s a great character, as there are many others in this novel.
She mentions her family and friends’ warnings that she will regret marrying a man they perceive to be an untrustworthy and sinister womaniser, arracname warning she fails to heed—and yet later acknowledges as a regret that came years later. And she falls in love with him the night the orchestra plays the songs her father used to whistle when working at home.
Dec 29, Laura masteetta it it was ok. But the musician is also a lefty, and while Andres cares little about his wife’s emotions, he wouldn’t let an artist start a revolution.
Por partes parece ad hoc a la epoca, por otras no. His arrest due to arranacme of murder give her a taste of the true volatility and uncertainty of being a political wife, despite his release a few days later.

But if you insist in reading Mastretta, understand this, the novel was not written for an international audience. Para ella el era su mundo, su maestro y casi un sabio, pero apenas se alivia de su primer hijo y recibe su primera cachetada de realidad: But her colloquial style made her accessible to a wide array of readers, which made her and her novel famous.

There is no particular art to her writing style and the story is a dime a dozen, in Mexico at least.
