It’s not that it was bad, it was that it was so overly long and repetitive that avnturas mild humour became overshadowed by the ‘oh here we go again’ as the anti hero launched into one of his innumerable tales about dog only knows what until my eyes glazed over, my solxado melted out my ears and I thought of about 10 aventutas books that I could be reading right now instead of this. I’m glad I read it to the end though, because I enjoyed the last few chapters and the afterword more than the rest of the book.
I wanted to read it, because it was recommended by teachers on W. The story has its strengths and with an ironic touch, the author is delving into politics and the mistakes and exaggerations of the time of the World War Aventuas.
I was told this book would look different after a couple ddl years, however, I am not sure I would give it a shot in that time.
Like, I am sure academics who study enough other stuff can grok Svejk in its full grooviness. Want to Read Currently Reading Read.
I felt like that was good preparation Avdnturas thank goodness that’s over! A lesson in dead horse beating. I thought I was going to love it, obviously.
View all 7 comments. The big difference here is that 1 there’s no shift from fast witty one-liners and to serious plot stuff at the end and 2 the fast witty one-liners are not fast or one-liners. Let me begin by saying that I didn’t read this in the original Czech but in deel while I was living thereand the book seemed horribly flat to me.

Onto the next antic If only he had died sooner. I felt I was reading the same gag over and over and over told in slightly different ways. There is little development of plot or character. I loved the idea of this novel but not the page reality of it.

Therefore, he’s certainly not in his twenties. Svejk is simple and even could be likeable, but the jokes are cheap and far from fancy. While perusing Svejk was interesting in a historical sense, unfortunately I ended up not finding it as enjoyable as I had hoped. Some of the stories are amusing, but Hasek is no Dickens. At some point, I realized it was just going to continue in the same vein, and I wasn’t bothering to form any new impressions, so I put aside for now.

But then he does seem thick. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Also like Catch, there are too many characters, and the absurdist tone starts out entertaining but grows tiresome. That is not enough reason to send him to die on the frontline. It may be the abridged version that is more responsible, but I am pretty sure that the whole book would have been even more of a drag.

But I for one, am glad that Heller transmitted whatever he saw in Svejk to me in a way that could blow my teenage mind forever in his own book. It could be that the humour was too straightforward in Svejk. The main characte Svejk reminded me a Don Quixote of the previous century minus the idealistic approach towards the world and his actions.
But we know he’s already a veteran of previous war s. The actor is asking a woman – Yes… – Then I can take your place In the adaptation that I listened to, Svejk is played by another actor who was considered one of the best, if not the very best of his generation: Had it been given a good edit for length and content, I probably would have enjoyed it more. However, I liked his storytelling skills and could find Svejk a good communicator and nice guy to talk about headlines of our current days may be until I got asleep.

The author was an anarchist and the book was a seemingly incoherent mess which actually concealed a definite underlying structure. But for that man and others who suffered the injustice it must have been pretty hard.
