Featured Popular Ensembles Academy of Irgoletto. Franz And Carl Doppler: Albert Franz Doppler Performer: Sinfonia Finlandia Number of Discs: Usually ships in 24 hours. Notes and Editorial Reviews Thoroughly enjoyable, with excellent playing throughout. There are numerous stories flying around about the brothers, the most famous of which is that they toured Europe playing flute duets with one player using a left-handed flute which allowed them to produce a mirror flufes of each other.

As far as I am aware, there is no evidence to support this claim, and it may well be an urban myth, but it makes a good story. This is ostensibly salon music, and frequently makes use of famous themes of the day.

Fantasoe is a strong element of fun, and the music is enjoyable to listen to and to play. This disc comprises Read more transcriptions of many of the well-known two flute and piano works for orchestra, alongside the Concerto for two flutes in D minor. The piano writing lends itself well to orchestration and, played with orchestra, fantasid works are given new expressive means. The Rigoletto Fantaisie utilizes the main themes from the opera in a charming and amusing way.

The rigoletyo opening to the Hungarian Pastoral Fantasy is beautifully played, with Gallois giving a splendid performance. The pacing is just right, with a wonderful sense of flow and space.

List of works by Franz Doppler – IMSLP/Petrucci Music Library: Free Public Domain Sheet Music

The orchestration is cleverly put together, and mimics an eastern European orchestral sound. Gallois includes some subtle and well-placed pitch bends. The faster moving sections are fluent and engaging, with excellent technical control. The Andante and Rondo is perhaps one of the most frequently played of the Doppler works, with the lyrical Andante providing an opportunity for each of the flute players to show their expressive abilities, and the Rondo demonstrating technical prowess.

The two flutes here are evenly matched in their playing; one could almost imagine that they were multi-tracked. Only in this way can the true nature of this music come across as it does here.

The orchestral playing is similarly well controlled and provides an excellent accompaniment. The Star-Spangled Banner is a particularly effective moment, and one could almost imagine this arrangement being used to accompany TV footage for a presidential campaign.

The opening is rather more serious, with rich tone from both of the flute players and a strong sense of pulse.

The mood changes, giving way to a Viennese-style waltz. This is a sincere work, which maintains its weightiness throughout, despite virtuoso displays from the flutes and a particularly impressive cadenza. The playing is impressive from all performers.

The frivolity of the Fantaisie is replaced with a Romantic sentiment akin to Mendelssohn or Weber. The orchestral introduction is rich and full-bodied, and although one can still tell from the flute writing that Doppler is the composer, it is a world apart from the salon works that are so well-known by flute players the world over.

2012 Exhibitor Concert

As one would expect, the virtuoso displays are still very much in evidence, with some wonderfully executed similar motion chromatic scales heard in the two flutes. The playing in the Andante is rich, warm and expressive, with both flute players demonstrating a range of tone colours and good sense of phrasing.

The waltz-like movement flows along tigoletto, leading to a charismatic finale.

Gallois and Seo once again give an inspirational performance throughout but especially in the extended cadenza; their ensemble playing is truly spectacular. Thoroughly enjoyable, with excellent playing throughout. Fantasie for 2 Flutes and Piano, Op. Fantasie pastorale hongroise for Flute and Piano, Op.

Andante and Rondo for 2 Flutes and Piano, Op. Valse di Bravoura, Op. These were recorded earlier on BIS LPS with the original piano accompaniment which is preferable rigolwtto the orchestration here which overbears the flutes on occasion hence the less than perfect number of stars.

These wing sections, or their derivatives, continue to be the ones most commonly used for airplanes designed for both subsonic and supersonic speeds, and for helicopter rotor blades, propeller blades, and high performance fans. Intended to be primarily a reference work for engineers and students, the book devotes over pages to theoretical and experimental considerations. The theoretical treatment progresses from elementary considerations to methods used for the design of NACA low-drag airfoils.

Methods and data are presented for using wingsection data to predict wing characteristics, and judiciously selected plots and cross-plots of experimental data are presented for readily useful correlation of certain simplifying assumptions made in the analyses. The chapters on theory of thin wings and airfoils are particularly valuable, as is the complete summary of the NACA’s experimental observations and system of constructing families of airfoils.

Mathematics has been kept to a minimum, but it is assumed that the reader has a knowledge of differential and integral calculus, and elementary mechanics.

In two parts, this book winng a math beginning and abundant graphical abbtt of airfoil performance. Starting with Wing-Section characteristics, the forces on airfoils and their response to those forces are covered in 2D, 3D then fluid analysis. Symbols used in each chapter are identified prior to use.

Theoretical treatment is a progression of the developing insight in symbolic approximation from the contributors to understanding aerospace engineering. Many of the equations are represented in graphs so one can grasp it quickly and then proceed with the math.

Theory of Wing Sections: Including a Summary of Airfoil Data

Even then, the authors provide a quick precis for a perspective on defining solutions. Many times they seek the quick and simple, not simplistic, heads up approach while not flubbing on the math. So, while Theory of Wing Sections is not an introductory text, it is an excellent supplement or toolbox to deliver achievable options along with their performance and limitations.

Many designers or engineers dig into the doejhoff data section to explore well tried airfoils as a prelude to computer abboott analysis which may not divulge the underlying methods a given design is based. This book takes the mystery out of the meat. To truly ferret through the fundamental concepts here, one should have a working knowledge of calculus prepared to use it.

However, one can find use of this work studying the graphical wing section data noting the Reynold’s numbers apply to full size aircraft. One starts here for UAV model scale aircraft, doenhfof digs deeper. One person found this helpful.

I learned aeronautics to the Univ. I acquired almost all the theoretical contents of this book at that moment. This book helped me in recovering my deteriorated memory. wign

Other reviews have said this book is difficult to understand, but that’s probably because sectiobs don’t have the background to understand what this book is.

That said, I am an Aeronautical Engineer and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading and using this book. In this book, you’ll find all of the ‘classical’ airfoil theory; from basic thin airfoil theory to flow models and much more. The best tbeory of this book, however, is the extensive series of airfoil data tables in the back.

You can literally find out anything you want about abott NACA 4 and 5 digit series airfoils. Having all this data at your fingertips is an aerodynamicists dream.

It saves us the trouble of calculating performance characteristics and also serves as a check for most kinds of wing analysis codes you write. I highly recommend this book to any Aero Engineer or Aero student. You WON’T regret having it!

I had this book in college and lost it. It’s a good reference for any airplane designer and yes there is a lot of math but that is a product of aerodynamics and engineering.

Once you understand the graphs you can start building models and sectioons and possibly the next Canadian fighter jet. This is one of my favorite technical references. Ever since I was a child wings and airfoils absolutely fascinated me. Now, don’t think for a second that this book is only useful to aerospace engineers. Esctions dealing with a foil shape traveling od a fluid can find plenty of useful information in this book, if they understand enough ssections wing sections.

I wouldn’t buy this book to learn how to calculate lift, drag, or aerodynamic forces unless you’re very mathematically sectikns, as of it’s all explained in a rather dry and theoretical sense. What is truly of value is the information on all the NACA wing sections and the empirical data they collected, contained in the massive appendices.

I keep this book on hand for it’s comprehensive listing of various airfoils used in the aerospace industry. It was especially helpful during my capstone course in selecting the appropriate airfoil for our mission. A great book for those in the aerospace industry to have on hand. More formulas per page of any book I’ve seen. Engineer recipient was lost to conversation after sectiojs this gift. This is my second copy. A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Nonetheless, I highly recommend skimming the appendix, which includes the fashionsble parody article and the author’s comments on it, as well as a chapter or two from the book.

His interests include computational physics and algorithms, such as Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms for problems in statistical physics. It’s a shame our money is spent so foolishly to support the production of postmodern and obscurantist crap.

But there is another, second kind of error: Responses from the scientific community were more supportive. The complete review ‘s Review:.

I personally cast my vote for brunettes. Since Medawar’s time, the whispering campaign has raised its voice.

Fashionable Nonsense is a afshionable and maddening book. Each person gets to have their own reality. In a sense, epistemic relativism lies at the heart of what Sokal and Bricmont are criticizing. They’re so focused on equality and tolerance that they sometimes ignore the hard facts, twist those facts to suit their agendas, or even go so far as to claim that there is no such thing as objective reality or facts at all.

Suppose tomorrow someone were to come up with a satisfactory theory of turbulence. Not only was the paper accepted by the journal, it was featured, and lauded by postmodern intellectuals. Retrieved 15 April Their sense of humor fashionablr admittedly born out of frustration — is also ill-suited to their enterprise and their snide asides do it no service either.

An important book, it is nevertheless almost unreadable — mainly because of the absurd passages cited extensively by Sokal and Bricmont. This book will keep you laughing for hours. Although this is an important book, it is not a very enjoyable one to read, for the simple fact that the authors sokl compelled to quote at length from some of the most disfigured and meaningless jumbles of words that I have eokal seen sewn together in the guise of sentences.

As Sokal and Bricmont point out, even if the science the so-called thinkers cite were accurate most of the time it still has absolutely nothing to do with what they are actually trying pretending?

Fashionable Nonsense (Intellectual Impostures) – Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont

You can perhaps see that the sphere, that old symbol for totality, is unsuitable. He suggests there are plenty of scientists who have pointed out the difficulty of attacking his response. Indeed, to someone with our cast of mind, reading Fashionable Nonsense provides essentially the same experience as just reading Lacan, Kristeva, Irigaray, et. This latter point has been disputed by Arkady Plotnitsky one of the authors mentioned by Sokal in his original hoax.

The notorious parody written by Alan Sokal and published by a gullible gang of academics at Social Text is one of the sadder chapters in modern American academia.

This calls to mind Peter Medawar’s earlier characterization of a certain type of French intellectual style note, in passing, the contrast offered by Medawar’s own elegant and clear prose: And yet there is.

One will never be grateful enough to Sokal and Bricmont for pointing fingers towards a naked emperor.

He calls it ridiculous and weird that there are intensities of treatment by the scientists, in particular, that he was “much less badly treated,” when in fact he was the main target of the US press.

For a long time I thought that Sokal’s famous hoax publication, plus this book, were intended to show that modern philosophers, particularly in France, are spouting nothing but nonsense. The very fact that the paper was accepted and lauded shows how welcoming postmodern intellectuals are of such abuse. The preface and introduction to my edition make this clear, and the care Sokal and Bricmont employ in defining terms and not overstepping their boundaries of expertise is commendable.

The science aspect is of course easy to debunk, and thank god Sokal and Bricmont have done some of that work.
